Mayor taps studes in planting trees

MANGALDAN—To further improve waste management here, Mayor Herminio A. Romero, in cooperation with students of the University of Pangasinan, conducted a massive tree-planting activity at the dumpsite in barangay Banaoang last Saturday.
Personnel of the Ecological Solid Waste Management Enforcers’ Team and 79 students taking the National Service Training Program codenamed 1264 DA-Mangaldan Cluster, headed by their professor Angelita Servito,  joined Mayor Romero in planting 180 Mahogany seedlings which is specifically intended to enclose the dumpsite and protect it from erosion during rainy season.
“Kami po ay taos-pusong nagpapasalamat sa inyong pagtulong sa programa ng ating munisipalidad sa pangangalaga ng ating kalikasan. Nararapat lamang na sa pag-unlad ng isang bayan ay kaakibat ang pangangalaga sa kalikasan,” Romero said during the activity.
He said that the planting activity was held at the dumpsite to show to the students its actual condition and to encourage them to become more unwavering in protecting and conserving their environment.
“If not properly addressed, the waste problem here may become as serious or alarming as in other municipalities,” Romero said.
In proactively addressing the waste problem, the local government has been conducting tree-planting activities as well as information dissemination drives in various barangays on proper waste recycling, segregation and disposal.
The local government aims to reduce by 80 percent the total volume of waste presently being dumped here.
Team leader Bong Rivera, who invited the students to participate, said that another tree-planting activity will be conducted at the town’s slaughterhouse soon.
Aside from planting trees, the students from Mangaldan are also helping the local government’s information dissemination campaign on ecological solid waste management.
Rivera said that the program would never succeed without the collective support of the community
